The Azad Maidan police on Saturday evening arrested 22 alleged Shiv Sena activists, and six more on Sunday, for barging into The Times of India building opposite Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station and ransacking the reception lobby in protest against an article printed in Maharashtra Times.

All 22 accused arrested on Saturday were presented before a holiday court on Sunday and were remanded in police custody for a day. The other six men arrested will be produced before a court on Monday.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Cherring Dorje, the mob of Shiv Sena activists allegedly led by Sunil Vaman Salvi (48),was booked for criminal trespass, damage to public property, and rioting under Sections 427,323,452,141 to 149 of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 135 of the Bombay Police Act.

“We have seized a Safari jeep and a motorcycle from the accused, which they had arrived in for the rampage. We will now find out the names of the other accused who were involved in the ransacking. All those involved will be arrested,” said Dorje.

On Saturday afternoon, over 50 men carrying saffron flags burnt copies of the Times Group’s Marathi daily,Maharashtra Times,in front of the entrance to The Times of India building. Shouting slogans, they barged into the building and damaged property in the lobby of the building until the police rushed to the spot and arrested them.

“The mob claimed to be from a co-operative society. However, they were waving saffron flags and yelling pro-Shiv Sena slogans based on which we suspect that they are activists of the Shiv Sena,” added Dorje.

The activists who were rounded up told the police that they were irked by a Maharashtra Times article, which claimed that party MP from Amravati,Anandrao Adsul, was about to defect to the NCP.
