Tension gripped a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur on Tuesday after a man, who had been arrested five years ago for allegedly kidnapping a woman from another community, was killed.
According to police, they were informed on Monday that the body of a young man was found on the outskirts of the village. Police said a team rushed to the spot, where local residents identified the deceased as 27-year-old Omkar.
Police said the victim was returning home from the fields when he was attacked. Police said eyewitnesses claimed that on Monday, Omkar allegedly passed remarks at the brother of the woman he allegedly abducted and this led to a heated exchange between the two. In a fit of anger, the brother allegedly attacked Omkar with the sticks he was carrying and continued striking him until he lost consciousness.
Based on a complaint filed by Omkar’s family, police said four people — including the brother of the woman and three of his relatives — have been booked and a case has been registered on charges of murder at Kanth police station.
Police have detained three suspects for questioning. No one has been arrested so far. The body was sent for an autopsy.
A police team has been deployed at the village, which is Hindu-dominated, to avoid any untoward incident.
“Investigation into the case is underway. Prima facie, it appears that a head injury caused the death, but the post-mortem report is still awaited. Further action will be taken based on the report and other findings from the investigation,” said Rajesh Dwivedi, Senior Superintendent of Police, Shahjahanpur.
He added that the victim’s family suspects that the murder is connected to the incident from four to five years ago. Police, though, noted that after Omkar’s release from jail, there had been no reported disputes or complaints from either side until now.
During the initial investigation, police learned that five years ago, Omkar had been booked in a case of kidnapping a woman from another community. He was arrested at the time and remained in jail for about six months before being released on bail, said Station House Officer (SHO), Kanth police station, Rakesh Maurya.
Subsequently, the woman’s family arranged her marriage within their community, while Omkar too got married later to a woman from his own community.
“We are in the process of gathering all possible evidence related to the case and are carefully verifying statements recorded by the police and witnesses,” said SHO Maurya.
