A sub-inspector died during an exchange of fire between the police and some suspected cattle smugglers under Fareedpur police station limits of Bareilly district late Wednesday night. Police arrested three persons on Thursday in connection with the firing.

The team of five police officers, including S-I Manoj Mishra, reached Diknapur village around 11 pm Wednesday upon receiving information that some animals were being smuggled. The officers stopped a group of people moving with 14 oxen in response to which the men, suspected to be belonging to a rival gang of smugglers, opened fire, Bareilly SSP Dharamvir.

In the ensuing exchange of fire, 37-year-old Mishra suffered a gunshot injury. He was rushed to a hospital in Bareilly where he later died. The SSP said three persons have been arrested.

Dharamvir said the team had no plans for an encounter, and added that those arrested said they did not know that the men who had stopped them were police officers since it was dark. The officer said the accused were involved in smuggling animals for which they were paid around Rs 250, adding that there are rival gangs operating as well.
