A group of farmers today staged a protest outside Munshiganj guest house while Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi conducted interviews for party posts in Amethi.
The villagers demonstrated against poor power supply and electricity infrastructure in rural areas, and demanded upgradation of transmission lines and new power sub-stations.
The representatives of the farmers wanted to meet Rahul and Priyanka but were instead asked to give a list of demands to Rahuls representative in Amethi Chandra Kant Dubey. This prompted the protesters to allege that they were being discouraging from meeting the Gandhis.
Led by Rita Singh, the group of farmers shouted slogans outside the guest house for about two hours while Rahul and Priyanka conducted interviews for the posts of block and town area presidents of the Congress.
The problem is very serious. The electricity lines that were laid in the region years ago under Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana are developing constant faults. Many villages are not getting more than eight hours of electricity a day, Rita Singh said.
Priyanka left for Delhi today after completing the interviews in Amethi, the parliamentary constituency of her brother Rahul,as part of the Congresss reorganisation process.
Rahul, the Congress vice-president,held meetings with prominent block-level leaders at Munshiganj guest house in the evening.
According to sources, during the closed-door meetings with Rahul, the leaders were asked not to repeat the mistakes of the Assembly elections and instead project a united face before the public. Rahul reportedly told them that it is their responsiblity to strengthen the cadre at the block level.
Assembly segments under Amethi parliamentary constituency had seen a lot of infighting during the Assembly election last year. It resulted in the defeat of Congress candidate from Amethi Assembly seat Amita Singh as well. The Congress won only two of five Assembly seats under Amethi parliamentary constituency.
Rahul will leave for Delhi on Thursday after laying the foundation stone for a recruitment centre for Central Reserve Police Force at Trisundi in Bhadar area in the presence of Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.
