5 men sexually assault Dalit girl after beating up her male friend in Lucknow; 2 arrested

One of the arrested men, Lalit Kashyap, 33, is undergoing treatment at a hospital after the alleged encounter, and his condition is stated to be stable. The other arrested suspect has been identified as Miraj, 23, said Nipun Agarwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lucknow.

The police spotted two men riding a motorcycle in the area. When the police signalled them to stop, the riders allegedly opened fire. The police returned fire, injuring Lalit Kashyap, who was then arrested, while his associate, who was riding pillion, managed to escape. A combing operation is underway to track down the escaped associate.

Another police team arrested Miraj from a short distance away from the encounter site.

The police said that Kashyap has three previous cases registered against him and that they recovered the motorcycle, a country-made pistol, and cartridges from him.

Police teams are conducting raids to trace the remaining three accused, the police said, adding that a medical examination of the girl was going on.

“All five accused were well acquainted with each other. The arrested men have confessed to the crime,” said a police officer involved in the investigation.

On Saturday afternoon, the girl went to a nearby market, where she met her male friend. They went to a nearby garden and were talking when the five men arrived at the spot. The men began questioning the couple about why they were together in the garden. Within minutes, they allegedly started beating the girl’s riend and chased him away from the spot. After he fled, the accused allegedly dragged the girl to a secluded area and sexually assaulted her before escaping from the scene.

After returning home, the traumatised girl informed her sister about the assault, who then immediately conveyed the details to their father and other family members. Her father approached the police with a complaint in the evening.
