Man ‘sets himself on fire’ near Assembly in UP

A 40-year-old man allegedly attempted self-immolation near the Vidhan Sabha in the Hazratganj area of Lucknow on Monday, police said. Police said Munna Vishwakarma, suffered around 60 per cent burns and is under treatment at a hospital.

DCP Central (Lucknow), Raveena Tyagi, said the police are making enquiries to determine the motive behind the man’s move.

During preliminary inquiry, the police found that Vishwakarma, who had been a tent trader until recently but now makes a living by driving an e-rickshaw, had a financial dispute with the owner of a tent business. The tent house owner has been detained for questioning, police sources said.

Vishwakarma, who hails from Saadatganj, reportedly reached the Vidhan Sabha Marg on Monday afternoon, poured a flammable substance on himself and set himself on fire. Police personnel present nearby quickly extinguished the flames and took him to a hospital.
