Gyanvapi: Court admits fresh plea seeking removal of ‘iron’ shoe stand

THE VARANASI district court has admitted a fresh application in the Gyanvapi mosque case, seeking the removal of “the shoe stand made of iron from the disputed site, so that justice be done”.

The application was filed by Vishwa Vedic Sanathan Sangh functionary Kiran Singh in the court, which will hear the matter on March 19.

“That it transpired from the newspaper Dainik Jagran that on the first day of March, 2024, the defendant no. 4 ‘Anjuman Intezamia Committee’ has put a shoe stand made of iron on the temple site/Gyanwapi site which is the subject matter of suit. It is also revealed that the administration has allowed the defendant no. 4 to keep the said stand on the disputed site despite the knowledge that the matter is subjudice before the law court,” says the application.

“It is, therefore, most respectfully prayed that the honourable court may graciously be pleased to order the defendant nos. 1 to 4. to remove the shoe stand made of iron from the disputed site, so that justice be done,” it says.

On July 21 last year, the District Court had ordered a scientific survey of Gyanvapi mosque complex to ascertain whether the mosque was “constructed over a pre-existing structure of a Hindu temple”.
