Govt moves plea to withdraw case against ‘Huji operative’

Session Judge Bhoo Dev Gautam has fixed May 20 to decide on the application.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday moved an application in a local court of Gorakhpur,requesting for permission to withdraw the case lodged against alleged HuJI operative Tariq Qasmi in connection with the serial blasts which took place in Gorakhpur in 2007,injuring six persons.

Government counsel S Pandey said Additional District and Session Judge Bhoo Dev Gautam has fixed May 20 to decide on the application. Qasmi is facing charges under the Explosives Act,(7) Criminal Law Amendment Act,and attempt to murder. The chargesheet has been filed against Qasmi,but the charges are yet to be framed.

Qasmi is also facing trial in the cases of serial blasts which took place in the courts in Faizabad and Lucknow on November 23,2007. The UP police’s Special Task Force had arrested Qasmi and another alleged HuJI operative Khalid Mujahid of Jaunpur outside the Barabanki railway station on December 20,2007.
