Buoyed by the results in the recent Assembly bypolls in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) on Wednesday announced that it would expand its footprint to other states, including neighbouring Uttarakhand.
A statement issued by the party said that steps would be taken to strengthen the party in Uttarakhand.
“The party will organise protests and will raise issues concerning the public,” stated the statement issued by SP chief spokesperson Rajendra Choudhary.
The party said that it would contest the Assembly bypoll in Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand and announced the name of Manoj Kumar Bhatt, a long-time SP leader in the region, as its candidate.
Polling for the Assembly bypoll will take place on November 25, while the counting of votes will be conducted on November 28.
Pithoragarh seat in Kumaon region of Uttarakhand had fallen vacant after the death of MLA Prakash Pant.
The press note said that SP president Akhilesh Yadav met party workers from Uttarakhand on Wednesday.
The statement claimed that the people of Uttarakhand are “disappointed” in both the BJP and the Congress. “The two parties only care about power. The SP, meanwhile, is an alternative which talks of development. The BJP only raises futile issues and plays politics by dividing people,” it claimed.
Choudhary said SP would now start holding public meetings to spread awareness about the party and development work carried out by it.
The SP had recently won three seats in the UP Assembly bypolls and two seats in the Maharashtra state polls.
