Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday urged young scientists at Kolkatas Bose Institute to stay in the country and work for its development.
There was a time when young,talented people used to flock universities abroad for higher research. We are now creating similar facilities in the institutes of our country where scientists,instead of going abroad,can undertake research, Singh said laying the foundation stone for the unified academic campus of the prestigious institute,set up by eminent scientist Acharya Jagdish Chandra Bose.
The new is estimated to cost Rs 100 crore. We have asked for this money from the Centre and already some money has been released by them, Professor Gaurisankar Sau of the institute said.
Singh was accompanied,among others,by Governor M K Narayanan,Union Minister for Science and Technology Vilasrao Deshmukh,state Finance Minister Amit Mitra.
Later in the day,the Prime Minister inaugurated the year-long celebrations of the Indian Science Congress at Calcutta University.
Expressing fear that growing culture of narrow-mindedness might affect the creative,imaginative and innovative instincts of the countrys youths,Singh said that the Centre hopes to formulate a new Science and Technology Policy that will not only upgrade the existing policy documents of 2003 but will also attracts youths to science and technology.
He observed that for many years the capacity of higher scientific and technical infrastructure were stagnant and that science and technology was not used in development process as much as we should have.
Our government has invested as never before in the science sector,Singh said.
