The cabinet today decided to extend the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police to all 141 wards of Kolkata Municipal Corporation as far as law and order and traffic management are concerned.
The extension of the jurisdiction will be effective from September,Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said. Kolkata Police will set up eight more police stations in the new areas.
At present there are 48 police stations covering most KMC areas. But nearly 50 wards of KMC falls under the jurisdiction of West Bengal Police.
Last year, the then chief minister had said Kolkata Police would take over the eight police stations of West Bengal Police located in KMC areas. But the decision was not implemented for various reasons,an official said. In 1985,the number of wards of KMC was increased from 100 to 141. A large area of South 24 Pargans was included but the police administration remained with West Bengal Police. The character of the added area has also changed in the last 25 areas,an official said.
An official with Kolkata Police said that manpower would be increased to manage law and order and traffic in the new areas.
Strike caveat
The state labour department has directed all trade unions not to organise strikes without discussing their grievances with the state government. The initiative has been taken by the labour department to build an industry-friendly image.
The Left Front-backed trade unions ran riot and a large number of industries had to face closure. Work culture is completely lost because of unprecedented strikes and lockouts. We have instructed all our trade unions not to call strikes on minor issues, said Purnendu Basu, state labour minister. No Trinamool-backed trade union will call a strike without the consent of the state government. Attempts will be made to resolve issues through dialogue.
