Jadavpur University Student’s death:  ‘Mastermind’ sent to judicial custody, cops can question him in jail’

The court allowed the police to interrogate him in jail, it is learnt. When entering the court on Friday, he did not answer any questions from the media.

A former Jadavpur University student arrested in connection with the death of a first-year student after ragging on the varsity campus, who according to police is the mastermind behind the incident, was on Friday produced in the Alipore court that sent him to judicial custody till September 8.

The accused in question, Sourabh Choudhury, one of the 13 current and former students arrested in the case, has denied his role in the student’s death that took place on August 10 hours after falling from the hostel balcony. Sourabh was the first to be arrested in the case.

The court allowed the police to interrogate him in jail, it is learnt. When entering the court on Friday, he did not answer any questions from the media.

The police said Sourabh created a WhatsApp group named ‘JUMH’, instructing its members as to what to say when asked if he was staying in the hostel at the time of the incident. The group was deleted later, it was claimed.

The police have said that the student was stripped in a hostel room and then made to walk naked in the corridor.
Two FIRs — one of murder and other of tampering with evidence — have been lodged in this regard at the Jadavpur police station.
