The Calcutta High Court Monday sought an action-taken report from the West Bengal government on the clashes during the Ram Navami rally in Howrah by Wednesday (April 5).
While hearing a petition filed by the leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, demanding a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the incident, the division bench of Acting Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya directed the police to submit CCTV footage and other visuals along with a report on the arrests made till now.
Sources said the court also asked Advocate General SN Mookherjee why the Ram Navami procession was granted when there were past instances of trouble in the same area.
On Friday, Suvendu Adhikari filed a PIL seeking an NIA probe into the alleged incidents of violence that broke out in the Howrah and North Dinajpur districts Thursday. He also demanded the deployment of central armed forces in the affected areas to bring the situation under control while alleging that the state police failed to restore peace.
Last Friday, fresh violence was reported in Howrah’s Shibpur area. Similar incidents of violence also erupted at Dalkhola in the North Dinajpur district.
