The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed police to prevent unauthorised entry into the private medical college and hospital in Paschim Bardhaman where a second-year student, who was allegedly gang-raped outside the campus on October 10, is undergoing treatment.
The court also ordered adequate security arrangements to maintain tranquillity around the institute amid protests and heightened public attention.
A vacation bench of Justice Shampa Dutt (Paul) told the Asansol- Durgapur Police Commissionerate to ensure that no one is allowed inside the college and hospital premises without proper authorisation.
The direction followed a petition by a local NGO seeking deployment of police personnel to safeguard the campus in Paschim Bardhaman district.
In a separate but related application, the college administration told the court that examinations are under way and that between 100 and 150 outsiders were entering the campus each day.
The influx, the institution said, was disrupting exams and harming students’ ability to study. Justice Dutt (Paul) granted the college’s request to bar unauthorised entrants and ordered the Durgapur-Asansol Commissionerate to take steps to prevent any untoward incident.
The court also instructed the Commissioner of Police to deploy adequate forces on the campus. The deployment, the bench said, should be made at the cost of the college. Police were asked to ensure that security arrangements allow students and staff to continue academic activities without hindrance, while also preserving the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
The survivor, a student at the medical college, was allegedly attacked when she went out for dinner with a male friend on the night of October 10. Police have so far arrested five people in connection with the incident.
