Kolkata fire: A fire broke out at a godown on R N Mukherjee Road in central Kolkata on Thursday morning, sending thick plumes of smoke across the area and hampering firefighting operations. The site is located barely 200 metres from Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police Headquarters.
Six fire engines were pressed into service, and no casualties were reported. The godown, housed in an old multi-storey building with narrow access lanes, belonged to Atherton Engineering and stored computer, motor, and car parts. Residents said the fire was first detected around 10 am.
According to initial reports, a short circuit in the air-conditioning unit may have triggered the blaze. Those present on the upper floors were safely evacuated. Firefighters faced severe difficulty in entering the premises due to dense, chemical-laden smoke that caused breathing problems and eye irritation.
“There were some chemicals inside the building, which is why the smoke is burning the eyes and nose. Visibility is very low, and it’s difficult to go inside,” said one firefighter.
Fire personnel wearing oxygen masks attempted to enter the building, while oxygen cylinders and water were kept ready in case of inhalation-related illness. Ladders were deployed to reach the second floor, but poor visibility prevented access. A smoke suction machine was later used to clear the air, and glass windows were broken to release trapped smoke.
Workers who were inside at the time said they managed to escape in time. “We were working on the second floor when we heard someone shouting that there was a big fire. We rushed downstairs immediately,” said one of them to mediapersons.
The incident also caused traffic disruptions during peak office hours, as one side of the road was cordoned off for firefighting. “My office is just opposite the building where the fire broke out, and I had to walk as the road was closed,” said a commuter.
Fire officials said a short circuit is suspected, though a detailed investigation will be carried out after the fire is completely doused. “Our primary concern is to put out the fire. The cause will be investigated later,” a firefighter said.
