BJP MP Khagen Murmu from Maldah Uttar and Shankar Ghosh, Siliguri MLA and party chief whip in the West Bengal assembly, were allegedly chased and assaulted at Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri district where they visited to review damages due to recent floods in the area.
Murmu sustained critical injuries as their vehicle was allegedly ransacked. The 500-strong mob allegedly pelted stones and “attacked them with sticks”. Following the incident, Bengal BJP leadership alleged that Trinamool Congress was behind the attack.
Ghosh said that Murmu was “bleeding profusely”. “When we visited the area, suddenly some people came up to us and said they were Didi’s sainik and why are you here, we said we are Modi ji’s sainik,” he said, adding, “There is nothing left of the car, my entire body is covered in glass and Murmu is admitted in the hospital.”
Murmu and Ghosh have now been referred to a private hospital in Siliguri, and the state BJP plans to hold a protest rally in Kolkata against the attack.
Ghosh alleged that the incident took place at around 1 pm. He said that he and Murmu had gotten down from the car and were walking in the area, overseeing damages caused by floods and heavy rains, when the mob allegedly surrounded them and started to assault Murmu. Murmu’s security then intervened and immediately put both the leaders in the car. The mob allegedly chanted slogans of “Go away BJP” and pelted stones and sticks and shoes at the car, the windows of which were “broken” as a result.
Leader of Opposition in the Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari took to X: “Mamata Banerjee is on full panic mode. She has realized it (quite late) that the people of West Bengal have despised her inhuman act of ‘Dancing at Carnival with Celebrities’ when North Bengal was reeling under floods and landslides, with many people losing their lives and thousands left shelterless. In contrast, BJP MLAs and MPs were on ground doing their bit to provide relief to the affected people. So, she has now pressed the panic button and has now unleashed her goons belonging from the ‘special community’ and incited them to attack the BJP MPs and MLAs so that they can be (stopped) from engaging in relief work…Mamata Banerjee, you can’t intimidate BJP…”
Meanwhile, BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar alleged that the mob attacked the two party leaders in the “presence of the Mamata-police”. also posted on social media, “Failed Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee, who, even after receiving news yesterday of the catastrophic devastation in North Bengal and the tragic loss of many lives, was seen celebrating on the Carnival stage at Red Road, has clearly shown how fearful she has become of the BJP West Bengal workers and leaders who have been tirelessly conducting rescue and relief operations on the ground since yesterday… From yesterday until today, the people of Bengal will punish every one of your immoral and inhuman acts of brutality. Shame!”
TMC IT cell head Debangshu Bhattacharya claimed, “There were no party flags. It was the outburst of the common man. If someone wants to put in a line that those who assaulted were TMC sainiks, that is their wish.”
