History-sheeter and alleged coal mafia Rajesh Jha alias Raju Jha was shot dead in an SUV by unidentified people at Shaktigarh in Purba Bardhaman district on Saturday evening.
According to police, the incident took place around 7 pm when Rajesh Jha and one of his associates came out of an eatery situated on the National Highway-2. “After they came out of the eatery and boarded the SUV, a group of miscreants opened indiscriminate fire, killing Jha on the spot. His aide was injured,” said a police officer.
“We have started a probe. Those involved in the shooting will be arrested soon,” Superintendent of Police (Purba Bardhaman) Kamanasish Sen said.
Sources in the police said that the SUV in which Jha was killed allegedly belongs to Abdul Latif, who is absconding in connection with the cow smuggling case. Latif is considered close to TMC leader Anubrata Mondal, who is currently in the custody of central probe agencies investigating the cow smuggling case.
Local BJP leader Lakkhan Ghorui confirmed that Rajesh Jha had joined BJP in 2021. “He (Jha) joined the BJP in 2021, but later he did not keep in touch with us,” Ghorui said.
Meanwhile, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen said that Jha was a local coal mafia and that police would be probing the murder. “It is proved which party is connected to the coal scam. He (Jha) was with the BJP. Let the police probe it (murder),” Sen added.
