“There is more to it than meets the eye.” This is how arrested Paytm employee Sonia Dhawan has described the events of the last 24 hours.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Sonia said Tuesday: “I am blank right now. I am unable to process what has happened to us. They took us without prior notice. But I want (Paytm founder) Vijay Shekhar to answer me. There is more to it than meets the eye.”
Her family, too, alleged a “conspiracy” on the part of Vijay and his brother Ajay.

“She was an excellent employee. The company is witness to her dedication. And the fact that she became senior vice-president in such a short span of time means she was good at her job. She had no reason to threaten or blackmail them,” said her sister Rupali.
According to her LinkedIn profile, Sonia joined the company in January 2010. Also read | Who is PayTM’s Sonia Dhawan
As per a regulatory filing by One97 Communications Ltd — the parent company of Paytm — she held 1,400 shares in the company as of November 2017. Police said Sonia earned Rs 85 lakh per annum.
Her mother Rama Dhawan said, “A conflict between Sonia and Vijay had arisen over the last two months. The conflict was both personal and professional in nature. But Sonia was working like she would… If she had to threaten and blackmail… would she not have escaped.”
Her family also claimed her husband Rupak Jain had received a call on September 23, with the caller threatening to harm them and their son, and demanding Rs 5 crore.
Police said an FIR of criminal intimidation was filed at Sector 39 police station.
“The investigation is still underway,” said the SHO of Sector 39 police station, Amit Kumar Singh.
