The daughter-in-law of Kamal Kishore, the pan masala baron who owns Kamla Pasand, allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Southwest Delhi’s Vasant Vihar, police said on Wednesday. One of the entries in her diary pointed at marital discord, they said.
As per sources in the Delhi Police, the deceased, Deepti Chaurasia (38) was found hanging inside a room of a Vasant Vihar house — one of several bungalows owned by her husband Arpit’s family in the area.
Police said it was the husband who made a PCR call after discovering the body around 12.30 pm on Tuesday. He was at the gym when his mother informed him that Deepti was not responding to her calls. “The husband got home, went to the second floor and entered the bedroom, where he found his wife hanging from the [ceiling] fan. They lived together in the house,” a police officer said.
The woman was taken to Safdarjung Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
“A diary recovered from her room mentions marital discord between the two,” the officer said. Another investigator claimed that in the entries, which consist of phrases like “no love and trust”, she did not blame anyone.
Deepti’s brother Rishabh, meanwhile, told mediapersons at the hospital that all was not well between his sister and her husband, also alleging that she was “physically tortured”.
“We brought her home last year after she complained about physical abuse and her husband’s affairs. They [her in-laws] took her back, saying they would keep her like their daughter. But recently, she again complained about the [husband’s] affairs. I spoke to her two-three days ago. She was talking about her son’s admission,” Rishabh also told the media.
However, the lawyer representing Kamal Kishore’s family, later claimed that Rishabh was “emotional” and that he has “apologised” for his comments. “There was no affair and as far as I know, all was well. He (Rishabh) has lost his sister, and he is emotional. He has apologised for his statement and retracted it,” he said.
Deepti’s mother Sharda (63) told The Indian Express that she got to know about her daughter’s death only around 12 pm on Wednesday. “I have just cremated her. Can you bring my daughter back?,” the grieving mother said.
Police also said that at the time of the incident, only seven to eight domestic workers were present in the house.
The couple got married in 2010, one of the officers said, adding that they have a 14-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter.
A post-mortem examination of the body was conducted on Wednesday, police said. “Inquest proceedings have been initiated but no formal complaint has been received from the woman’s family. The statement of all her family members will be recorded. Further inquiry is underway,” an officer said.
