In a month-long crackdown on foreign nationals overstaying in the Capital, the Dwarka district police on Friday said they have apprehended 23 people from five African countries and initiated their deportation.

Police said those detained were overstaying or had entered India without valid travel documents. They were traced during routine intelligence-based checks across the district.

While personnel from Bindapur police station apprehended 20 people in October, Dabri police station detained two and Mohan Garden police station detained one. All were later produced before the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), which ordered their deportation, said police, adding that they were taken to a detention centre as per FRRO directions.

Police said teams had been developing intelligence on foreign nationals allegedly residing illegally in the area and subsequently conducted targeted checks. Those apprehended — both men and women in the 20s and 40s — include 15 nationals from Nigeria, four from Senegal, two from Ivory Coast, one from Tanzania and one from Liberia.
