Ten elevated, railway and drain overbridges in North and Outer Delhi, which provide connectivity to the central part of the city, are soon going to get a makeover, said officials.
According to a senior Public Works Department (PWD) officer, these bridges are very old and in dire need of repair and redevelopment.
“Potholes, broken surfaces, and worn-out carpetings are affecting traffic movement and also sometimes increasing the chances of accidents. These are the key stretches that connect central Delhi and New Delhi with North Delhi,” said the official.
Experts said that the current strip seal expansion joints, structural steel edge beam anchor plate, etc. of the existing damaged expansion joint will be dismantled.
“After this, new bearings, expansions joint strip seals will be installed. The new expansion joints will be fixed in a single position catering to horizontal movement up to 80 mm. The expansion joints will contain single cell assembly comprising edge beams, poly chloroprene seal, anchorage elements, support and control system, all steel sections protected against corrosion, welded with suitable anchoring arrangement as per MORTH/manufacturer’s specifications and approved design and drawing,” said the officials.
It is learnt that the expansion joints will have a warranty for 15 years. Besides road surfaces, the sidewalls of the bridges will be repaired, and the new bituminous surfaces will be laid with carpeting and grouting will also be done to avoid water logging in the monsoon.
Further, the PWD will remove extra-grown plants, grass, bushes, shrubs, etc on the side of the bridges and embellish the walls with thematic paintings and grills, said officials.
The ten bridges that will undergo repair in the coming months are located in Timarpur Crossing, Mall Road Crossing, Maurice Nagar, Gurmandi (Vijay Nagar Crossing), GT Road Crossing near Shakti Nagar, and Bharat Nagar over Najafgarh Drain in Delhi.
“Tenders have been floated. The tendering process will take about a month. Once the work is awarded, traffic police will be approached for no objection certificates to shut the portion and begin the work,” said the official. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 9,71,19,100.
