Delhi Police have arrested the prime suspect in the theft of a gold-plated kalash (urn), valued at nearly Rs 40 lakh, from a Jain temple in Northeast Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar, last month.
The accused, Munna alias Salim (23), a resident of New Seemapuri, was found in possession of a button-activated knife, officers said.
A separate FIR has been registered under the Arms Act, police added.
According to police, Munna is a repeat offender, previously involved in four cases involving robbery, burglary and weapons offences.
During questioning, he allegedly admitted to stealing the temple’s kalash on October 11, officers said.
Last month, police detained a 42-year-old scrap dealer from Sundar Nagri and Danish (24) from New Mustafabad, after parts of the stolen urn were recovered from them.
The theft came to light on October 12, when temple staff noticed the kalash missing from atop the shrine’s spire. CCTV footage showed a man descending a pole inside the premises after removing the urn during the night of Karva Chauth, officers said.
Police said the stolen kalash was made of ashta-dhatu, a sacred alloy of eight metals, and contained approximately 200 grams of gold. Its estimated value ranges between Rs 35 lakh and Rs 40 lakh.
