In a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Monday criticised the political parties over a “superficial” connection with Dr BR Ambedkar. He made the remarks at an event at the party headquarters held to mark Ambedkar’s birth anniversary. This was his second public appearance since the AAP’s defeat in the recent Delhi Assembly elections.
The party workers started gathering at the venue around 11 am where Kejriwal made an entrance to the tune of ‘Rang De Basanti Chola’, a song dedicated to freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and typically played at all AAP events. Addressing party workers and volunteers, Kejriwal emphasised upon his party’s ideological alignment with the teachings of Dr B R Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh. “Our party has considered Babasaheb and Bhagat Singh as our ideals. We have decided to follow their path — not just in words, but in governance and life,” he said.
“India’s two main parties have no genuine love for Babasaheb; Out of political compulsion, they’re forced to put up a facade of respect. These parties have deliberately kept the country’s poor uneducated as part of a calculated conspiracy to create and preserve their vote banks,” he said.
“Imagine if you tell your son to follow a certain path, but he refuses. He does the opposite of what you teach, contradicts your every word — and then every morning he places flowers before your photo and performs rituals. Wouldn’t you feel like giving him two slaps and asking, ‘You don’t follow anything I say, but you worship my image every day — what’s the point of that?’ That’s exactly what these parties and leaders are doing with Babasaheb Ambedkar,” the AAP chief remarked.
Speaking about the education sector, one of the areas where the AAP boasts of making significant achievements in the Capital, he accused the BJP of neglecting the reforms implemented by the party during its tenure. “What was Babasaheb’s biggest message? He gave the highest importance to education….But what do these political parties and leaders do? The exact opposite. They don’t invest in education. And now, what’s happening in Delhi is even more painful,” he said.
“They couldn’t fix the education system in Gujarat even in 30 years, and now they want to bring the same system to Delhi,” he said, drawing chants of “shame” from party workers.
The former Delhi chief minister also accused the BJP of deliberately keeping education standards low to retain electoral control. “I used to think improving education would help the next generation. But now I realise they have intentionally ensured good education is not delivered, so they can keep getting votes,” he said.
He went on to claim that under AAP’s governance, private schools were prevented from arbitrarily hiking their fee, and blamed the BJP for the recent fee hikes that have recently taken place across many schools of the Capital. “Other parties keep increasing school fees, but we ensured that didn’t happen. It felt like these private schools were waiting for the BJP to get into power so that they can increase their fee…Not all private schools are bad, but many took advantage the moment BJP came into power,” he said.
Marking the occasion, Kejriwal also praised the AAP-run Punjab government for its recent move to provide reservations for SC/ST lawyers in the government panel. Targetting the BJP for its Ambedkar Jayanti outreach, he said, “If you really follow Babasaheb’s ideals, then give reservations too. Otherwise, stop this farziwada (sham).”
Meanwhile, at another event, Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav also paid floral tributes to Ambedkar. “Congress and its leaders have always stood against the evil designs and misdeeds of the BJP and RSS, and fought relentlessly against foisting their dangerous divisive moves on the country…Congress will not allow the BJP and RSS to fulfil their agenda to weaken the Constitution and end reservation for the upliftment of Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs,” he said.
