A six-year-old girl died and her mother was hospitalised after a fire broke out inside their locked flat in the Tulsi Niketan area of Ghaziabad early on Saturday.
Officials identified the deceased child as Saina Parveen, daughter of Mohammad Zakir. Saina’s mother, Sabbi Parveen alias Pinky, 30, is undergoing treatment at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital in Delhi.
According to officials from the fire department, the blaze is suspected to have originated from a refrigerator inside the apartment, which soon filled the entire flat with thick smoke.
Rahul Pal, Chief Fire Officer (CFO), Ghaziabad Fire Service, said the incident was reported around 2.25 am through the Vaishali control room. Fire and police teams from the Tulsi Niketan outpost under the Teela Mod police station immediately rushed to the spot.
“When our teams arrived, they found flat number 61A locked from the outside while flames and smoke were coming from within. A crowd of onlookers had gathered, but no one could confirm whether any occupants were inside,” Pal said.
The firefighters broke the lock and opened the flat with the assistance of the police and found a refrigerator engulfed in flames. The fire had spread smoke throughout the flat by then, the official said.
“Using a water pump, the blaze was doused, and all doors and windows were opened to let the smoke escape. Once the smoke subsided, the team began searching the premises and found a woman and a young girl lying unconscious on the floor of an inner room,” Pal said, adding, “We immediately rushed them to GTB Hospital.” The girl was, however, declared dead by doctors.
