A day after a man was arrested for shooting at a 17-year-old girl at Ballabgarh in Faridabad, he allegedly opened fire at a police team on Thursday when he was taken to a spot near Kabeelpur village to recover an illegal firearm. The police team retaliated, shooting at him in the leg.
Police said Jitender alias Jatin (30), a resident of Saramathla in Gurgaon, was arrested on Wednesday after the Sector 65 Crime Branch team conducted searches in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, before finally arresting him from Sarmathla in Gurgaon.
“We suspect he had fled Haryana after shooting at the girl,” said an officer.
During questioning, he allegedly told the police about an illegal firearm that he had hidden near Kabeelpur village in Faridabad.
On Thursday, he was taken to the spot to look for the weapon. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Varun Kumar Dahiya said, “When the Crime Branch team took him to the spot, he grabbed the weapon from a pile of stones, fired at the police team and tried to escape. Despite being warned, he fired again, prompting retaliatory action that left him with a bullet wound in the leg.”
Jitender was hospitalised and is in a stable condition, he added.
Police said that following the incident, Jitender was booked in a case of attempt to murder at the Sector 58 police station. A countrymade pistol, four live cartridges and two spent shells were recovered from the site, police said.
This is the second case of attempt to murder lodged against Jitender in the recent past. On November 3, an FIR was lodged on the charge of attempt to murder and under the Arms Act in connection to shooting at the 17-year-old girl at Ballabgarh. He allegedly shot at the girl because she stopped speaking to him.
“Jatin, an accountant at Rawal Institute College in Jakhopur, Faridabad, had known the girl for about a year, as both visited the same library. She had stopped talking to him two weeks ago. He had been stalking her since 2024,” a police spokesperson said.
“On November 3, he followed her on a motorcycle, demanded to speak, and opened fire when she refused. He fled while leaving the country-made pistol at the spot,” the spokesperson added.
The girl was returning home from a library in the evening when Jatin, who had been waiting outside, opened fire from a close range. The CCTV camera footage showed he aimed at her head but the bullet grazed her left shoulder and forearm.
