Delhi-cious

Cafe Delhi Heights in Gurgaon makes an indelible impression with its “whatever” attitude.

The sign at the door announces: “Push, pull, whatever”. It is in this admirable jaane bhi do yaaron state of mind that we enter Cafe Delhi Heights. The management says the aim of the cafe is to hold a mirror to Delhi — to reflect the melting pot that the city is,be it in terms of food,décor, pop art or the Dilliwallah’s general state of mind. Boy,do they succeed. The restaurant is decorated with a pastiche of quirky posters, murals and picture portraits — relating in some way or the other to the Capital.

The eatery offers a true mixed bag in its seating arrangement as well. Patrons can choose from reclining on a chatai to sitting in the Middle Eastern curtained booths,to New York-style bar stools. One wall is plastered with pictures of Old Delhi that have been clicked by amateur photographers. Besides,part-time rock stars are welcome to come and play to the crowds here,as and when they like.

It takes a while for us to tear our eyes away from the surroundings and check out the menu. Upon flipping through the pages,we are immediately re-engrossed. Visually arresting and cheerfully meandering in its content, the menu once again reflects Delhi’s dining tastes. A Singaporean Laksa sits cheek- by-jowl to Italian Canneloni, while the pani puri can be accompanied by minced mutton,if the diner wishes so.

We start with a warm Panzanella salad,a twist on the original salad from Florence, comprising copious amounts of croutons, zucchini, onions, tomatoes and other veggies tossed with Parmesan in a large bowl. Our server garnishes the salad with pepper from a mill. Forgetting that we’ve ordered a pretty substantial meal,we proceed to devour it,leaving nary a leaf.

Up next are Crispy Rock Shrimps with Sriracha Mayonnaise. Piquant yet creamy, crisp on the outside and bursting with flavour inside, the prawns are rapidly dispensed with. For our mains,we order a Juicy Lucy Burger and a lamb-stuffed canneloni. The Juicy Lucy is one of the mainstays of the menu (there’s even a board tabulating the number of Juicy Lucy burgers sold till date). Mammoth in size,it consists a 250 gm minced lamb patty stuffed with 200 gm of bubbling cheese and other accoutrement. To our eternal shame,we are unable to finish the said burger (stuffed to the gills as we were),but enjoy as many bites as we can manage. The canneloni is equally appetising, smothered as it is in cheese and stuffed with fragrant, savoury lamb.

Our one complaint was that we had not a whit of space in our stomach for any desserts. Ah well, there’s always a next time.
