Chief Election Commissioner’s daughter is Noida’s first woman district magistrate

Roopam was born on October 21, 1990, in Agra. She finished her schooling in Kerala and graduated from St Stephen’s College with a degree in Economics. She is also a national-level rifle shooter and holds a state record in the 10 m air rifle event.

Medha Roopam, a 2014 batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the first woman District Magistrate (DM) of Gautam Buddh Nagar. She took charge of the Collectorate Office in Greater Noida’s Surajpur on Wednesday.

Her father, Gyanesh Kumar, a retired IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, is the Chief Election Commissioner of India.

Her appointment came after the Uttar Pradesh government on Monday ordered the transfer of 23 IAS officers, including DMs of Ghaziabad and Prayagraj, among others. She succeeds Manish Kumar Verma, who has been transferred to Prayagraj in the same role.

Her husband, Manish Bansal, is also a 2014-batch IAS officer serving in Saharanpur.

Roopam was born on October 21, 1990, in Agra. She finished her schooling in Kerala and graduated from St Stephen’s College with a degree in Economics. She is also a national-level rifle shooter and holds a state record in the 10 m air rifle event.

Following her selection in the administrative service, she began as an Assistant Magistrate in Bareilly until June 4, 2015.

On October 23, 2016, she was transferred to Meerut as Joint Magistrate and later served in Unnao in a similar position. Roopam also served as Joint Director of UPAAM (UP Academy of Administration & Management) in Lucknow, Special Secretary for the Women’s Welfare Department, and Chief Development Officer of Barabanki.

Her first posting as DM was at Hapur. Within a year, she was promoted as the Assistant Chief Executive Officer of Greater Noida. In June 2023, she was transferred to Kasganj as DM.

In September 2024, a video of her sitting in a tractor accompanied by two people, including the driver, as she was inspecting waterlogged rural areas, went viral on social media.

Despite multiple attempts, Roopam could not be reached for comment.
