A 19-year-old man allegedly thrashed an autorickshaw driver in Faridabad after the autorickshaw crashed into his car, then chased him when the auto driver was rescued by the crowd to beat him up again, and took away the auto with the help of a man who he hired by paying Rs 500 to compensate for the car damage, police said on Saturday. The autorickshaw driver, who had come from Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh to Faridabad to earn a living and started driving the autorickshaw just three days ago, succumbed to his injuries, and the car driver has been arrested, officials added.
The incident took place around 12.30 pm on Wednesday, according to police, at Nangla Chowk when autorickshaw driver Bunty (32) allegedly crashed into a car driven by Rohit (19), which led to an argument between the two.
“After an initial confrontation, the accused drove his car, a Swift, about 100-200 meters ahead, stopped the auto driver, and started beating him. Due to the assault by the accused, Bunty lost consciousness. He was left injured at the spot, and the accused hired a man to drive the auto by paying him Rs 500 and took the auto away with him,” a police spokesperson said.
In her complaint to the police, Bunty’s sister Neeraj Devi said, “When my brother Bunty did not return home, I searched for him at Nangla Chowk and found out that my brother’s auto collided with a car. The driver then thrashed my brother, who was rescued by people around. My brother then started driving his auto towards Pali, but he had covered only a short distance when the same man yet again thrashed him and took his auto with him with the help of someone else to compensate for the damage to his car,” she said.
Upon receiving the incident report, a case was registered under the relevant sections at the Mujesar police station.
A police spokesperson further said that the deceased was a resident of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, and had come to stay with his sister in Nangla village just three days ago when he started driving the autorickshaw.
The Crime Branch DLF team in Faridabad arrested the accused and recovered the vehicle used in the incident near Etmadpur Bridge in Sector 31. The accused is a resident of Nawada village. “During interrogation, Rohit confessed that he was on his way to Sururpur for some work when his vehicle was hit by the auto. This led to him assaulting the auto driver and later hiring an unknown person to take the auto with him. The accused has been presented in a court and has been remanded to police custody for the recovery of the auto,” the official added.
Police officer Darpan Kumar said that they were checking if the accused had any criminal antecedent.
