AAP shifts venue, picks IG stadium to pass Lokpal Bill in public presence

The Delhi Police had opposed government's proposal to convene the session at the Ramlila ground, citing security issues.

Taking into consideration Delhi Police’s objections against holding a special session at Ramlila grounds to pass the Janlokpal Bill, the Aam Aadmi Party government has decided to change the venue of the February 16 session to Indira Gandhi indoor stadium.

The government remains firm on its decision to pass the bill in public — an election promise — despite vehement opposition from the Congress  and Opposition BJP.

Terming it a deliberate attempt to misguide the people, Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely said, “The move is unconstitutional.

The AAP government is running Delhi like a private company. This is nothing but a gimmick to withdraw attention from it  being unable to keep its  promises.”

Harsh Vardhan said, “It is pure theatrics. It (the Bill) has to be passed in the Assembly, so why go to stadium and spend people’s money…”

The Cabinet has decided to conduct the special session to clear Janlokpal Bill, formally named Delhi Lokayukta Bill (2014), on February 13. The process will continue till February 16.

The discussions on the Bill will take place in the Assembly, whereas the bill will be cleared in the presence of the people on February 16 at Indira Gandhi stadium.

However, the draft of the Bill, which was supposed to get the Cabinet’s nod on Friday, has been deferred till Monday. “There are observations made by various departments at the meeting today and we are pondering over them.

The bill will be cleared by the Cabinet on Monday,” Urban Development Minister Manish Sisodia said.

Asked why the venue had been changed from Ramlila Maidan to Indira Gandhi Stadium, Sisodia said, “We have shifted the venue because the seating arrangements are better at the stadium.”
