VIP duty comes first for the Mohali police,so it appears.
Sharing its border with the Punjab and Haryana capital,Mohali faces high pressure of VIP security, who either visit or pass through Chandigarhs satellite district headquarter frequently.
Hardly a day passes when the local police are not involved in the duty of the powers that be.
VIP duty had earlier taken a toll on the investigation of various crimes, the latest victim being the kidnapping case of 5-year-old Mehak, who was recovered from the Ambala railway station on Thursday.
The police, meanwhile, have no time to further investigate the case to catch the abductors as they were busy making security arrangements for the visit of Punjab Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister in Zirakpur on Friday.
While the first half of the day was spent on VIP duty in Zirakpur, officers were later deputed for another VIP function in Rajpura on Saturday.
We were busy in VIP duty and could not devote any time to investigate the girls kidnapping case, said a senior district police officer, who did not wish to be named.
As mystery continues to shroud the entire story of Mehaks abduction and safe return in less than 24 hours, the failure of further investigation seems to have come as a boon for the kidnappers.
Interestingly, police officials were busy with the security of Sukhbir Badal on Wednesday evening too, when Mehak was kidnapped from outside her house.
We are on security duty of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal and will be able to look into the case only after he leaves, a police officer had told Newsline. Sukhbir was at an electronic news channels office in Mohali on Wednesday evening.
