A lower Court today awarded seven years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) to two highway robbers who were involved in a robbery case dating back to 2009 which took place in Sector 33. However, two of the co-accused were acquitted by the Court as the complainant in the case refused to identify them. Another co- accused is an undertrial.
The Court sentenced Rajeev alias Raja and Bhupinder Singh alias Bhuppi to seven years rigorous imprisonment. They were held guilty of abduction with confinement & robbery.
Those acquitted are Jaipal, son of a Punjab police sub-inspector,and Harinder, son of a UT police Inspector. They were acquitted as the prosecution failed to prove the charges against them. On May 27,2009,local businessman Lalit Behl was waylaid by five armed men while returning from Delhi in his car. They drove along with him to his Sector 33 house and fled after robbing him of cash and valuables.
The incident started with a car stopping near his vehicle near Kurukshetra on Highway No 1. Three armed men asked his driver to get down. As per the prosecution, the robbers pushed him beside Behl in the rear seat and threatened to kill them if they raise an alarm. The Kurukshetra police had arrested Bhupinder and Rajeev Raja in another robbery case when they disclosed their involvement in the Sector 33 robbery case of Chandigarh.
The Chandigarh cops then arrested the other two accused,Jaipal and Harinder. The accused were also involved in looting a bank and other robberies in Panchkula and Mohali.
