Local administration in Punjab’s Ferozepur district put teachers on duties “to prevent stubble burning by farmers in the field” and “to make farmers aware of not doing so”, which was rolled back after teachers protested.
This comes even after Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced that state’s government teachers will not perform any “non-teaching, additional work”.
Teachers’ unions in a statement said the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) of Zira sub-division assigned the duties to the teachers.
Teachers’ unions including the Democratic Teachers Front (DTF) Punjab, 6635 Teachers Union, Government Teachers Union Ferozepur, Government School Teachers Union, Computer Faculty Association (Reg) Punjab and other allied organisations, sat on protest against the notices sent to the teachers to perform stubble burning duties.
A protest was held at the SDM Zira office and the protest continued from 3 PM to 10 PM on Monday (October 27).
The union leaders said the teachers were paid for teaching, but the bureaucracy of the Punjab government imposed duties on teachers for non-educational work. It harms the education of children, the leaders said.
They also said the schools declared several holidays due to the floods in Punjab, which have already affected the children’s education.
The protesting unions also slammed saying that while the CM is talking about not assigning non-teaching duties to teachers, authorities are imposing duties on teachers related to stubble.
“The administration is also humiliating teachers by issuing show-cause notices and has also asked the teachers to register complaints against the farmers, which is a highly condemnable step. The government wants to create a rift between the farmers and the employees…” said protesting unions in a statement.
After the protest, the SDM Zira gave a written assurance to withdraw the show-cause notices issued to the teachers and rollback of the duties.
