Statehood demand: JD(U) collects 1 lakh signatures

The members of Janata Dal United claim to have collected 1 lakh signatures as part of a campaign for the creation of Chandigarh as a state.

The members of Janata Dal United claim to have collected 1 lakh signatures as part of a campaign for the creation of Chandigarh as a state. The campaign was started in October last year. Signatures were collected form Chandigarh and adjoining areas.

The party had put up its first signature camp at Sector 17 Plaza on October 3,2012.

Addressing a conference,president of Chandigarh unit of the JD(U) Surinder Bhardwaj said in order to curtail the extraordinary powers enjoyed by the bureaucracy on deputation from Punjab and Haryana states,the residents of the city want a proper democratic set up in the shape of a state assembly.

The signatures would now be handed over to the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil.

The demands include setting up a state boundary commission to demarcate the areas of 50 km surrounding Chandigarh to

include the area of Kurali,Banur,Rajpura,Kharar,Lalru,Dera Bassi,Panchkula,Barwala,Morni,Pinjore,Kalka and

Baddi. They also demand the formation of a state legislative assembly,formation of separate Chandigarh Public Service

Commission,civil service cadre and subordinate service

selection board.
