She’s just one film old but Adah Sharma attracts numerous inquisitive glances,finger-pointing and autograph seekers as we walk towards her favourite refreshment joint,the local sugarcane juice stall. I come here every single day. Nothing can be quite as refreshing as a glass of fresh ganna juice, declares the actress and even before she places her order,the stall keeper has the regular customers personalised order ready. Juice in a plastic glass with no ice,lemon or ginger.
Sharma,who played the lead in Vikram Bhatts 1920,seems to have changed none of her habits after her newfound celebrity status. I still hang out with the same people at the same places. In fact,Ive always loved roadside food and nothing will stop me from having some whenever I can,not even a big mob of people, she laughs,referring to the mini mob that has gathered across the road to have a glance at the pretty face. Recognition is quite a high for her and she cant stop gushing about how she feels so thankful and appreciated when people know who she is.
The petite actress started her struggle in Bollywood just the way thousands of girls who come to the city with stars in their eyes do. She went through months of auditioning and rejection. It was after six months of struggle that her peaches-and-cream complexion and curly hair caught the attention of Bhatt. Its quite odd that he chose this sweet looking gal,since he was looking for someone to play a very unglamorous role in his horror flick.
When I went for my first meeting with Vikram,he asked if I dont mind looking ugly. Then,on my first day on the set,I was given strict instructions that Im not allowed to throw tantrums about my looks since I had to look as scary as possible, says the bubbly young girl as she sips the last of her juice and pays the blushing stall keeper.
Hit by the sudden sugar rush,we decide to take a walk and talk about her second film which will also star her 1920s co star,Rajneesh Duggal. After the success of 1920 Vikram wanted to see how the audience will react to Rajneesh and me in roles that are not so gruesome. So he chose us for Phir,which he is producing, she explains. We ask if this role will give her scope to show off her pretty face. At least more than my first film; in Phir I play a very studious,serious and cynical girl. I dont smile even once throughout the film,it was quite difficult, she giggles.
But this 22-year-old girl has nothing to complain about. With so many girls to compete with,I feel extremely lucky to get the break that I did. It almost feels like there was some divine intervention that gave me this easy stardom, she signs off and rushes back to her hectic schedule of dubbings,meetings and photo shoots.
