A rally on October 17 in Sonipat, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to address to mark one year of the third term term of the BJP government in Haryana, stands cancelled, the saffron party Monday said. The party did not state any reasons behind cancelling the rally for which preparations were on in full swing with Chief Minister Saini holding multiple review meetings, including one earlier in the day.
“The rally stands cancelled, for now. There is no further information about it,” Sanjay Ahuja, state BJP media in-charge, told the The Indian Express.
Only hours earlier, Saini and several BJP leaders had reached the venue in Sonipat and reviewed the rally’s preparations. On Sunday, Saini had chaired a Cabinet meeting in which preparations were discussed for the rally. Prior to that he had held a meeting with officers of various departments to review the preparations for the programme.
Barely an hour before BJP announced that the rally has been cancelled, party’s state unit chief, Mohan Lal Badoli, issued a press statement saying that “a grand rally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be held on October 17” at Education City in Rai, Sonipat.
“Lakhs of people will gather in Sonipat to listen to PM Modi at this ‘Public Trust–Public Development’ rally. A grand welcome and felicitation will be organized for PM Modi on his visit to Haryana. Every time PM Modi has visited Haryana, he has brought major gifts for the state. Since becoming PM in 2014, this will be his 17th visit to Haryana on October 17. This time too, PM Modi will lay the foundation stones and inaugurate several projects dedicated to the public,” Badoli said in the statement.
Later in the day, another statement issued by the state government said that CM Saini’s proposed visit to Nuh on October 14 (Tuesday) too has been cancelled. The CM was scheduled to attend a state-level Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti celebrations in Nuh. In this case too no reason for cancellation was provided.
Party’s district media in-charge Jatin Busri said that “due to the CM’s busy schedule, the Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti programme that was to be held on Tuesday at the grain market in Nuh has been postponed until further notice”. He added, “the new date for the event will be announced soon”.
According to the BJP, Saini was to inaugurate or lay foundation stones of 13 schemes during the visit.
