Barely hours after taking charge, Haryana Director General of Police OP Singh took Panchkula police by surprise when he dropped in unannounced at the Sector 7 police station late Tuesday night.

Caught off guard by the new state police chief’s sudden arrival, startled personnel immediately called in their in-charge. Singh, during the inspection, expressed displeasure over the unkempt surroundings and directed the staff to clean up the premises and streamline their functioning.

Taking the exercise a step further, Singh asked the police personnel to submit by 11 am Wednesday a 400-word note on what they would record in the GO Register if they were in his place making a surprise visit to a police station.

Earlier in the evening, soon after assuming charge, Singh addressed police officers and personnel across Haryana over wireless, urging them to uphold discipline and integrity. “Our courage is greater than our challenges,” he said, describing the police department as his family and Haryana as his karmabhoomi and his children’s birthplace.

Acknowledging the risks and sacrifices of the force, Singh said police personnel work tirelessly to protect lives, often at great personal risk. He stressed that both the public and the government have high expectations from the police, adding that the department will “work with full dedication” to meet them.

Promising a firm stance against crime, Singh said, “Thugs and criminals have no place in a civilised society.” He urged officers to maintain patience and discipline in the face of challenges and reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of subordinate staff, saying he held deep respect for their contribution.

Singh took additional charge as Haryana DGP earlier in the day after Shatrujeet Kapoor was sent on leave in the wake of IPS officer Y Puran’s case.
