A Delhi-based consultant has submitted a report about the new office building for the Deputy Commissioner worth Rs 100 crore, to which Chandigarh administration has suggested some important changes.
Since the current DC building in sector 17, which is the oldest, will be converted into National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), the office will be moved to a new location in Sector 17 near Shivalik view at the cost of Rs 100 crore.
CB Ojha, Chief Engineer of the UT Administration while speaking to The Indian Express said, “Yes the consultant has submitted the report and we have asked him to make certain changes. We have asked him to ensure that all public dealing offices are on the ground floor.”
The Chief engineer stated that they will be holding another review regarding the project and they expect that the work will begin at the end of this year.
Another official of the engineering wing stated that the project plans are being sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs for the final decision since it involves an amount of 100 crore.
The UT has also decided to approach the NGMA next week.
“We will be taking up the matter with National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) next week as we know that the existing DC Office building, near the TS? Central State Library in Sector 17 will be converted into a National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) with an amphitheatre in front of it,” Ojha added.
The original DC office in Chandigarh has been designed by Swiss architect Pierre Jeanneret which UT plans to preserve and make an Art gallery. The proposal for the new project was mooted in 2018.
Soil capacity check
Chandigarh administration has already floated tenders to conduct the soil capacity check at the location of this new project.
The new building will come up with future-proof technologies and conform to a 5-star GRIHA rating, (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment)
It is said to be incorporating the latest environmental norms. The building will have a sewage treatment plant and rooftop solar power plant to generate its own tertiary treated water and electricity, UT officials say.
The site of new building
For this new seven storey building with a lavish interior with a car parking space of 600 cars in the basement, Chandigarh administration has identified the vacant two-acre land next to Hotel Shivalik View in Sector 17.
It will not just house the office of Deputy Commissioner, but also several offices which at the moment are all scattered around the DC office.
