Mohali: District administration calls NDRF, declares holiday in schools

The district administration declared holiday in all the government and private schools and educational institutes on July 10 as a precautionary measure.

Waterlogging and flooding was reported across Mohali district on Sunday due to incessant rain. The district administration had to deploy six companies of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to rescue the people trapped in waterlogging. Three houses collapsed at Kharar and at least eight flights were cancelled.

The district administration declared holiday in all the government and private schools and educational institutes on July 10 as a precautionary measure.

The district administration is keeping a close eye on the water level in Ghaggar river. The NDRF teams were deployed at the embankments of the river in Derabassi area to meet the emergency situation and to evacuate the people living in the low-lying areas.

Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain told The Indian Express that the waterlogging was reported from across the district and the disaster response teams have recovered around 250 animals. She added that many people were also rescued and were taken to safer areas.

“The evacuation drive is going on in the low-lying areas near Ghaggar at Tiwana village near Bhankharpur in Derabassi. The evacuation was completed as a precaution,” she added.

The DC said that the runway at Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport was made operational after dewatering it.

The DC added, “The grid was inundated and many areas reported power cuts but the power was restored in most parts of the district.”

The administration issued flood control mobile numbers in addition to pre-existing landlines: Mohali-0172-2219505, Derabassi-01762-283224, Kharar-0160-2280853.

In case of non-working of landlines, the administration issued three mobile numbers: 7347661642 for Mohali, 9464234000 for Kharar, and 9855025466 for Derabassi.

In Mullanpur (New Chandigarh) area, teams of the district administration are keeping a close eye on the check dams which had been constructed to store water for irrigation purposes.

More than 50 check dams are located in the area and during the rain, the administration has to keep an eye on the water level of these dams.

In Mohali, water entered houses in Phase-5, forcing the residents out in the rain.

On whether the Army was called in to help the district administration, the DC said that they had informed the Army but the situation improved after the rain stopped in the afternoon.

“The Army identified the vulnerable areas. In case there is need of deployment, the Army can be deployed, but as of now the situation is under control,” the DC added.

Houses collapse at Kharar

At aleast three houses collapsed at Kharar due to heavy rainfall. A house collapsed in Panchwati Enclave at Kharar after a wall had caved in. Two houses were damaged at Daun village. Nobody was injured in the incident. The district administration also sounded vigil near the SYL Canal which was flooded due to rain and could pose danger.

At least eight flights were cancelled from Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport due to heavy rainfall.

NDRF teams reach Rurka village 

NDRF teams reached Rurka village near Mohali after waterlogging was reported at the village. The NDRF team evacuated some villagers who were trapped in their houses due to the rainfall.
