Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann Tuesday congratulated the Women Indian cricket team for lifting the ICC Women’s World Cup by scoring a 52- run win over South Africa to claim the title at Navi Mumbai on Sunday
With three players from Punjab, including captain Harmanpreet Kaur, all-rounder Amanjot Kaur and Harleen Deol, in the winning team, it has been a historic moment for the state.
Mann talked with the trio in a video call Tuesday morning and shared his thoughts with them with the players also sharing their views. “Harmanpreet, Amanjot Kaur and Harleen Deol. Our Punjab’s daughters. Our Punjab’s lionesses. What can I say to you? Many congratulations. You won the World Cup. You won the world. There is a lot of enthusiasm in the people of Punjab for our three girls, all of whom performed well whenever they got the opportunity. I saw every ball of the final and at 12’o clock you took the catch of Nadine de Klerk and not only the date changed but you changed the Tarikh (History). You made history and you all did great,” the CM said, adding that the team will motivate the coming generations to perform well.
“You had reached the semi-finals and finals earlier. But we used to lag behind Australia, England and South Africa with the kind of infrastructure they had at that time. The way, Indian team chased a total in excess of 300 in the semi-final with Jemimah Rodrigues making a century is commendable. To defeat Australia is a huge thing,” the CM added.
Harmanpreet from Moga, who led India to the 2022 Commonwealth Games final, also talked about how the current Punjab government has been supporting players across sports. “This is a huge achievement for us. We want to thank you as you have always supported us. Since you became CM, sports persons’ lives have changed,” Harmanpreet said.
Speaking with Amanjot from Mohali, whose father is a carpenter, Mann said, “I saw the video of your father watching the match. You have done Punjab proud, your parents proud. Lakhs of girls will get motivated to do something. You are the brand ambassadors of Punjab.”
Harleen Deol, who had shifted base to HPCA Academy in Dharamshala early in her career, said, “It feels good and it’s a huge achievement for us. I will say the government has supported us.”
