The Centre Friday appointed Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia as the Acting Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court. The order came soon after Justice Ritu Bahri, the Acting Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, was elevated as as the chief justice of the Uttarakhand High Court.
A notification by Union Ministry of Law and Justice read, “In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia, Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from the date Justice Ritu Bahri relinquishes the charge of Acting
Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court consequent upon her elevation as Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court.”
Born on November 1, 1965, Justice GS Sandhawalia is an alumnus of DAV College, Chandigarh and did his LLB from the Panjab University in 1989.
He was enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana in 1989. As a lawyer, he represented Chandigarh Administration, Panjab University, the Official Liquidator attached to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Punjab Financial Corporation, the Punjab State Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation (MARKFED), Punjab State Electricity Board, Food Corporation of India, Punjab State Agricultural and Marketing Board, Punjab State Civil Supplies Corporation and the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Justice Sandhawalia has handled a mixed bag of work pertaining to Criminal, Civil, Service, Land Acquisition and Constitutional law on the private side besides being on the panel of the aforesaid institutions. He has been a sportsman during his College days representing his College and University in the sport of Lawn Tennis. He belongs to a legal family. His father was Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court from 1978 to 1983, and of the Patna High Court from 1983 to 1987.
Justice Sandhawalia was elevated to the Bench on September 30, 2011, as an additional judge and became permanent judge of Punjab and Haryana HC on January 24, 2014. He had remained a member of Vigilance/Disciplinary Committee and RTI Committee of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
