Four days after a local court of Ludhiana stayed the release of Punjabi film ‘Jodi’, the movie that has Diljit Dosanjh and Nimrat Khaira in lead roles released in the theatres on Friday late after both parties reached a compromise.
The film, said to be based on the life of slain Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila and his second wife Bibi Amarjot Kaur, got embroiled in a legal trouble after Patiala-based Ishdeep Randhawa moved the court claiming that Chamkila’s first wife Gurmail Kaur had sold the exclusive rights to make Chamkila’s biopic to his father Gurdev Singh (who died in November last year). Ishdeep had also claimed that Gurmail Kaur had taken Rs 5 lakh from his father in lieu of giving the rights and signed a written agreement following which the court had stayed movie’s release for May 5. Hence, all the shows scheduled on Friday. the opening day, were cancelled.
However, it released around 7 pm in the evening after the theatres and multiplexes received a letter from the distributor stating that the issue has been resolved and both parties have reached a compromise. Speaking to The Indian Express, a senior marketing official from PVR Cinemas said that the movie was released after 7 pm across regions including Punjab and Chandigarh. “We released it after a letter was received from distributor stating that the case has been withdrawn by opposite party,” he said.
An official statement released by the filmmakers, said: “After unforeseen difficulties, “Jodi..” has released across India. The morning schedule for the film was unable to begin as planned due to unanticipated issues. Now that all concerns have been fixed, the team is pleased to inform you that the shows resume across India.”
Produced by Thind Motion Films and Rhythm Boyz Entertainment, the film is written and directed by Amberdeep Singh and produced by Daljit Thind and Karaj Gill.
Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur were gunned down on March 8, 1988, during the dark period of militancy in Punjab when they arrived for a performance with their band. Chamkila was just 28. Their assassination mystery has remained unsolved to date.
Born and brought up in Ludhiana, Chamkila was revered as one of the greatest live performers ever in the Punjabi music industry.
