Jewellers’ stir

The strike by jewellers against imposition of import duty on gold bars entered the seventh day today.

The strike by jewellers against imposition of import duty on gold bars entered the seventh day today. The Ludhiana Jewellers’ Association today erected a big hoarding at Fountain Chowk on which photos of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee were seen.

The jewellers wrote on the hoarding: ‘Jewellers par reham karo.’ (have mercy on the jewellers). Later the Association members protested at the same spot and demanded the rollback of the import duty.

Anand Sikri, president of Ludhiana Jewellers’ Association, said,“We will continue our strike till our demands are met. The protest is at a nationwide level and our association members are taking all steps to get this duty rolled back.”

In the Union Budget presented last week,a 4 per cent import tax has been imposed on gold bars which has increased the price of gold by Rs 1,000 per 10 gram.

Though the jewellers of Ludhiana claimed that they are on an indefinite strike, many opened their shops for a few hours after the protest.

Sikri, however, denied this. He claimed that only branded showrooms are being opened while the rest are being kept closed.
