Murder during concert in Punjab: JAC calls for university shutdown on Monday

On Thursday night, the JAC initiated a chain hunger strike, starting with a student from the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET).

To seek justice for Aditya Thakur, a 22-year-old second-year computer science student at Panjab University’s University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), who was fatally stabbed during a concert by Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma on March 28, the Joint Action Committee (JAC), PU, Friday organised a classroom boycott in the physics and chemistry departments, with students showing unanimous support for the movement.

As per the committee, this boycott will now extend to other departments across the university, and until justice is served, no academic or administrative activities will be allowed to function within the university.

On Thursday night, the JAC initiated a chain hunger strike, starting with a student from the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET). As per a representative, even after 18-20 hours, no representative from PU’s administration has come forward to engage with the students.

“This indicates that the administration is attempting to suppress students’ voices and ignore their struggle. However, JAC wants to make it clear that this hunger strike is just the beginning — if necessary, it will be converted into an indefinite hunger strike. If any student’s health deteriorates during this protest, the V-C and the administration will be held directly responsible,” said a student.

On Friday, the PU administration called for a formal meeting, but there was no resolution, and the JAC has decided that on April 7, PU will be completely shut down, no classes will be held, no exams will take place, and no administrative work will be done. This struggle, added a representative from UIET, will no longer be limited to class boycotts but will extend to disrupting all administrative activities, examinations, and other university functions.
