Tuesday came as a big relief for Chandigarh and the Eastern Malwa region of Punjab, which recorded no rain after being pummeled by incessant downpours for three days. The heavy rain led to an increased inflow of water in the rivers and the dam reservoirs.
The water level in Pong Dam went up by 26 feet in three days — from 1,337 feet on Saturday to 1363 feet on Tuesday. As the rains stopped the inflow reduced to 80,613 cusecs Tuesday evening as against 2.24 lakh cusecs in the morning. The outflow from the dam was 18,408 cusecs.
Similarly, the water level in Bhakra Dam’s was recorded at 1624.14 feet — the inflow was 1,53,395 cusecs and the outflow 18,330 cusecs.
Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh recorded 214 mm, 196.1 mm and 776.7 mm of rain, as against the normal of 104.1 mm, 99.5 mm and 242.4 mm, respectively from June 1 till July 11 morning. Punjab recorded 106% surplus rain while Haryana and Chandigarh recorded 97% and 220% surplus rain, respectively.
In Punjab, Tarn Taran recorded highest 356% surplus rain followed by Ferozepur (292%), Fatehgarh Sahib (244%), Amritsar (217%), Rupnagar (202%), Gurdaspur (200%), Nawanshahr (140%), Mohali (136%), Kapurthala (136%), Patiala (126%), Pathankot (123%), Hoshiarpur (97%), Jalndhar (72%), and Ludhiana (68%) surplus. The remaining districts too got 30% to 6o% surplus rainfall while Barnala, Fazilka, Moga, Sangrur and Mansa recorded deficit rain ranging from 4% to 34%.
In Haryana, Kurukshetra recorded 304% surplus rain followed by Sonipat (211%), Panipat (182%), Panchkula (167%), Jajjhar (166%), Gurgaon (130%), Yamunanagar (121%), Rewari (117%), and Charkhi Dadri (100%). Barring Jind and Hisar, which recorded 18% and 24% deficit rain, respectively, all other districts of Haryana received surplus rain between 32% to 83%.
