A pall of gloom descended on Barah Kalan village in Haryana’s Jind district after receiving the news that its 26-year-old resident was shot dead in California, the US, on Saturday.
Villagers said the victim, Kapil, son of small-scale farmer Ishwar Sharma, had left for the US nearly two and a half years ago, allegedly through the “dunki route” after spending reportedly close to Rs 45 lakh. They said Kapil was arrested shortly after entering the country by scaling the Mexico border wall, but he was later released and settled there. Kapil was working as a security guard, they said.
Barah Kalan village Sarpanch Suresh Gautam told The Indian Express, “Kapil was shot dead in the ensuing argument when he tried to prevent a man from urinating in a prohibited area on Saturday. The incident followed an argument between the two. We received the news the same day.”
Kapil was the only brother to two sisters, one of whom is married, said the sarpanch.
The sarpanch said that they would meet the Jind Deputy Commissioner, requesting that Kapil’s body be brought back to India at the earliest.
Sadar Police Station (Jind) SHO Inspector Baljeet Singh said that they had no information about the tragedy.
