A young couple was arrested late Sunday night for allegedly consuming heroin at a Zirakpur hotel. The police said they arrested the couple in an intoxicated state, acting on a complaint from the management of the Ramada Hotel.
Satinder Singh, Station House Officer of the Zirakpur police, said that following a call from the hotel, Assistant Sub-Inspector Rajinder Singh from the PCR team reached the location, after which ASI Sulakhan Singh conducted a room search.
The police said they recovered used foil papers, a lighter, and cigarette packets during the search, adding that the couple had admitted to having smoked heroin moments earlier. The man and woman were identified as Aditya Pratap Mukherjee, 27, a resident of Sohna in Gurgaon, and his wife Bhavna, 28, a native of Bhiwani in Haryana.
A case has been registered under sections 27, 61, and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act at the Zirakpur police station.
A dope test held on the couple at Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, returned positive, according to the police.
Aditya works with a real estate firm in Gurgaon while Bhavna is pursuing a PhD. The police said the couple had arrived in Zirakpur to visit Aditya’s father Prateek Mukherjee, who is undergoing treatment at JP Hospital, and had checked into the hotel for the night.
The police are investigating how the heroin was procured — whether the couple brought it themselves or received it from an outside source. They are reviewing CCTV footage from the hotel premises for clues.
“We are investigating the supply chain angle to determine the source of the heroin,” said Satinder Singh.
The man and woman were produced before the Dera Bassi court, which will decide whether they will be sent to Patiala Central Jail or to a de-addiction centre in Mohali.
