A day after a 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of GMCH-32,her family did not rule out the possibility of foul play behind her death.
On Saturday morning,Anchal allegedly jumped from the parapet of the fifth floor balcony of the hospital building following which she was rushed to the emergency ward where she succumbed to her injuries.
While the matter is being investigated, police sources say that there is a possibility that a friend of Anchal could be behind her taking the extreme step. However,it is too early to say anything, said the police source. Sources also add that one of her friends,a resident of Sector 33 was also called for his statement yesterday.
The family has not lodged any formal complaint, alleging foul play and further investigation is in progress, said Kirpal Singh,SHO of Sector-31 police station.
Speaking to Newsline,Anchals mother Ravinder Kaur denied that her daughter had any serious mental illness. Around a year and a half ago,Anchal had a problem of hallucinations. She would often tell me that there was someone standing at our door and he would kill her. I got her treated at GMCH-32 after which she was completely fine. I have no clue why she would have committed suicide, she said.
I really dont understand what to say. If Anchal had to commit suicide why would she go all the way to GMCH-32. There is definitely more to her death. My daughter could never take such an extreme step, Kaur said.
Anchals death comes as a second blow to the family after her father Pawan Kumars death, who was working as a supervisor at the Public Works Department in Chandigarh, due to brain illness in 2008.
Following her fathers death,Anchal was sent to live with her grandmother and maternal uncle in Delhi. After studying in R P Memorial School till class 9,Anchal left her school recently to pursue her studies through correspondence, her mother said. I have not been keeping well for the last one year and have been undergoing treatment for a stomach illness in Delhi. This year Anchal was to appear for class 10 and she got herself enrolled for a correspondence course so that she could visit us, Kaur said.
In August,Kaur had gone to Delhi for her check-up and on August 30,Anchal accompanied her back to Chandigarh. She wanted to take a break and she came along so that she would spend some time with us. She was to return to Delhi in a months time and this was supposed to be her vacation, Kaur said sobbing.
On Saturday night at around 1 am,Kaur said that she woke up and found Anchal missing from her bed. While the main door was locked, the balcony door had been unlocked and possbly she could have gone out from there. I looked for her in the nearby park and market area but could not find her. At around 6 am I made a PCR call and reported that Anchal had gone missing. By 10 am I got a call from the police informing me that Anchal had jumped from the hospital building and had sustained serious injuries, Kaur said.
Dismissing claims of Anchal being under any kind of strain,Kaur said,What possible tension can a child her age face? And I am sure if there was anything serious, she would have definitely told me.
Police had recovered a suicide note addressed to her mother from the spot on which,I am really very very sorry, along with her mothers phone number was written.
Police are investigating the case under section 174 of CrPC and said that Anchals viscera had been sent to CFSL and the reports are awaited. Anchal is survived by her mother and two younger siblings- Sneha,11 and Shobhit,9.
