In a bid to create awareness among EWS (economically weaker sections) families about the vacant seats under EWS category in 48 city-based private schools for entry-level classes, the UT Education Department has decided to rope in NGOs.

According to official information, more than 400 seats are lying vacant in private schools under EWS category and disadvantaged group. Out of it,over 336 seats are vacant in 35 recognised unaided private schools and above 54 in 13 minority schools.

A senior officer, requesting anonymity, said they knew that private schools would always try not to admit EWS students to their schools. That is why the department was playing an active role this time. “Last time, they had informed the Education Department they failed to get EWS students. Learning from the past, this time the authorities have already asked the interested parents to get their registration forms submitted at Government Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 19. After the process of submission is over, the department will itself submit the forms at the schools the parents had opted for,” he added.

Director Public Instructions (Schools) Upkar Singh has asked the department to contact at least 10 reputed NGOs to create awareness among the EWS families in this regard. “RTE Act is a mandate of Parliament, and we have to implement it for the betterment of society. We want that EWS children also get education. We will be taking the help of NGOs to create awareness among disadvantaged people about the admission,” Singh told Chandigarh Newsline.

As prescribed in the RTE Act,these seats are to be filled under 25 per cent quota in case of private schools and 15 per cent in case of minority schools.

Apart from St Kabir Public School,Sector 26,and schools of DAV managements,as many as 27 seats are lying vacant at Shishu Niketan Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 22,for nursery class; five seats for nursery at Sri Aurbindo Model School,Sector 27; 15 seats for pre-nursery class at Bal Niketan Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 37; and 15 seats for nursery are lying vacant at Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School,Sector 40.
