Days of Her Life

The city is slowly but gradually seeing new and offbeat spaces for art to be showcased. The latest being a cosy, albeit creative, corner at the popular restaurant — Girl In The Cafe — in Sector 17 that threw open a photography exhibition on Monday,in collaboration with an art management enterprise,ArtFile.

In the exhibition called ‘Strange Days’,city-based artist and photographer Maya Singh has presented a potpourri of 28 colour and black-and-white photographs. Those who know Singh are well aware that she’s a “shy” person. But looking at Maya-the-photographer’s work, one begins to realise that she has a keen sense of observation and dialogue with her surroundings. An asset for any photographer, these qualities come to the fore in photographs such as Creeper,a work zooming in on creepers on a wall that most of us would ignore in our day-to-day lives.

Shot over a period of time, the photographs offer a panoramic view of her world. From the golden fields of Punjab captured on a breezy day,to a man called Romeo walking on Mumbai’s marine drive,to the quintessential cycle stands of Chandigarh,to a stylish lady walking on New York’s Grand Central — Singh has frozen everyday moments that don’t seem mundane anymore. The collection also showcases Singh’s work in conceptual art photography. Particularly thought provoking and a bit moving is Birthday. A colour photograph,it captures a single helium balloon flying away near the top of a tree. “I like to open a dialogue through my work,” remarked Singh, adding,“These photographs offer a slice of my life and how I view the world around me.”

The mix of photographs with varied themes and views can be a bit distracting but given the fact that it’s her debut show,it’s alright to get a look at her diverse portfolio. Equally engaging in the array is Poof,a vibrant image of what looks like huge flowers on a grassy bed,but are actually fabrics drying out in the sun.

The exhibition is on till January 9
