The crime graph has shown a decline in Baddi,Barotiwala and Nalagarh. This is despite the fact that the region has fewer police personnel than required.

According to reports, against a total of 757 cases registered in 2008,only 583 — 17 per cent less— cases were registered in 2009. The month-wise crime graph, too, showed a decline, especially between August and December. Against 74 cases registered in August 2008,there were just 49 in the corresponding period a year ago. Similarly,in September 2008,79 cases were registered, while 37 cases were reported in September 2009. In October 2008,51 were registered in comparison to 23 in October 2009,while in November 2009 33 cases were registered against 52 registered in the corresponding month a year ago. December 2009 also showed a decline in criminal activities with only 28 cases coming to light against 73 in the corresponding month in 2008.

This is despite the fact that the police were short of staff. Baddi SP Chander Shekar Pandit said he was facing a shortage of staff. “Against a requirement of 500 constables to properly maintain law and order, only 165 are available,” he said, adding the sanctioned posts were 194. Similarly,he said, only seven Sub-Inspectors were posted against 13 vacancies.

Meanwhile, against Rs 1,98,400 collected as challan under the Motor Vehicles Act in 2008,12,457 vehicles were challaned in 2009 and around Rs 42 lakh was recovered as fine under the MV Act.
